LA MAJA Y EL HECHICERO
"La Maja y El Hechicero" loosely translates into "The Maiden and The Sorcerer". "Maja" is a colloquial word used in Spain to refer to a young, attractive woman. The image of a dancing "Maja" kept appearing as I began composing this piece. The opening "Maja" theme reappears in the second half of the work, transformed, as if hexed, or tricked by a sorcerer, into an aggressive, yet seductive motif. After a brief return of the initial material, the piece closes with a driving climax, slowly built by the flute's chromatic gestures against the pizzicato guitar.
It is dedicated with great affection to Eugenia Moliner and Denis Azabagic.
